@shuro #chatmail servers are faster, have more suitable rate limits for chat usage, are enforcing transport and end to end cryptographic security, provide instant push notifications for Android and iOS and do not collect any personal information .... Other than that classic email servers are fine as well (and may protect more against aggressive targeted blocking especially if you use a larger regional or international email server)

The general issue with e-ink-based readers and scrolling is that e-ink is designed to be mostly static, with sporadic (preferably partial-page) refreshes; but scrolling needs to have a very high refresh rate that updates the whole page simultaneously if it’s going to be usable.
I started looking for an Android reading app a long time ago, and I've redone my search a number of times over the years, but none come close to ALreader. play.google.com/store/apps/det…
It's not open source but it's free and the amount of customization beats any other app I've tried. For the scrolling to work to my liking I needed to dick around in the settings a bit to get it exactly to my liking, but the fact that I needed to do so is only due to the number of options available.
There are options for network libraries, but with the size of ebooks being what they are, I've not messed around with this yet.
Downloading a book to an Android is easy peasy tho
Kindles are great devices and they're subsidised, so they're cheap. It's perfectly possible to use them on e.g. permanent airplane mode. You don't even have to buy books from Amazon, if you use Calibre.
That said I'll be going Kobo next time because I love buttons.
I also prefer scrolling ebooks, and I settled on Librera. I have not found a way to get rid of the blank newline between each "page", but it's still better than turning pages.
Best ebook app out there. Stable, smooth scrolling, damn near infinite visual arrangements, broad range of settings in general, option for either folder of bookshelf based browsing (matters a lot if you don't have all your files' tags perfectly arranged), works well on any kind of screen, and even old devices don't lag with it under most circumstances.
I use Koreader on android with scrolling, also side loaded it on my Kobo e-reader (but I prefer paging on eink) you might be able to get it on kindle too

Nein. Es sind sich zwar - soweit ich das beurteilen kann - weitestgehend alle einig, aber in der derzeitigen Lage ist es eher unwahrscheinlich, wenn auch nicht unmöglich. Ein Problem ist, dass die Ampel erst nach dem Ampel-Aus mit dem Gesetzesentwurf aufwartete. Die wissen selbst, dass die Chancen da gering sind.
Ich glaube aber, dass es kommen wird, wenn auch erst mit der nächsten Regierung. Wenn man bedenkt, dass es sowieso einige Jahre dauert, bis die Strukturen aufgebaut sind, ist so eine relativ geringe Verzögerung auch nicht mehr schlimm. Das Wichtige ist, dass im Grunde alle Parteien den politischen Willen zeigen das umzusetzen.
Ganz generell denke ich, dass das typische Parteiengetue - Entwürfe ablehnen, nicht weil man dagegen ist, sondern weil der Antrag vom politischen Gegner stammt - im Sinne der Demokratie abgelegt werden sollte. Denn es ist absehbar, dass Deutschland immer schwerer zu regieren sein wird, da absolute Mehrheiten nicht mehr so einfach zu Stande kommen werden. Es muss aber irgendwie vorwärts gehen.

Persönlich bin ich bei "gut gemeinten" Gesetzen immer etwas skeptisch. Das Gesetz gegen Hass und Rechtsextremismus zum Beispiel hat den Habecks und Baerbocks unserer Zeit nur ein Mittel an die Hand gegeben, um wegen Banalitäten gegen Kritiker vorzugehen. Das eigentliche Ziel wurde anscheinend meilenweit verfehlt.
Feministen forderten in der Vergangenheit vieles, u. a. die Beweislastumkehr bei Sexualstraftaten. Stellt sich für mich als cis-Mann die Frage, wie man seine Unschuld beweisen kann, wenn irgendeine Frau behauptet, ich hätte ihr irgendwas getan. Der Grundsatz "im Zweifel für den Angeklagten" ist imho ein wichtiger Grundsatz im Rechtsstaat. Die Schuld muss bewiesen werden und das ist auch gut so. Ein Angeklagter kann seine Unschuld mitunter kaum beweisen und darf dann imho nicht einfach schuldig gesprochen werden.
Okay, darum geht es beim Gewalthilfegesetz nicht. So weit ich weiß. Da mir vor vielen Jahren aber mal zu Unrecht vorgeworfen wurde, ich hätte eine Frau geschlagen, bin ich da etwas vorsichtig. Das ist nicht schön, wenn einem so etwas vorgeworfen wird, denn es schadet dem Ruf enorm - auch ohne Rechtsfolgen. Allerdings habe ich den Gesetzesentwurf noch nicht gelesen.
Offenbar gibt es noch Diskussionsbedarf. Die AfD kritisiert, dass bei Zwangsheiraten und Genitalverstümmelung nicht hart genug durchgegriffen werde. Kann ich nicht beurteilen, ich weiß nur, dass es ein Genitalverstümmelung hier unter bestimmten Umständen strafbar ist, in anderen Fällen (männliche Beschneidung) unter die Religionsfreiheit fällt, selbst wenn nicht einwilligungsfähige Kinder betroffen sind. Das BSW kritisiert, dass auch biologische Männer bzw FzM-Transsexuelle nach dem Gesetzesentwurf der Rest-Ampel Zugang zu Frauenhäusern hätten. Die Linke kritisiert, dass ein vollständiges Lagebild nicht existiere. Und das wäre auch meiner Meinung nach eine wichtige Grundlage, bevor man irgendwelche Gesetze verabschiedet.
Im Kabinett der Ampel-Regierung wurde monatelang um ein Gewalthilfegesetz gerungen. Der Prozess verzögerte sich, sodass nach dem Ampel-Aus die Fraktionen von SPD und Grünen in Eigenregie...

If we look at dollars rather than real production, we see that our entire so-called "economy" is founded on causing harm.
Finance, real estate, war machines, police, insurance, scams, advertising, surveillance, manipulation and control, oil extraction, building machines that are burning down the world....these form the bedrock of our so-called economy.
As long as the money men are in power, anything we do that stops harm will "throw people out of work" in the language of the money men.
Because obviously those people can't just pivot to helping their fellow humans out because "there isn't money for that".
So if we continue to propagate the lies of the money men, all radical change is dead before it is born.
THE CULT OF THE MONEY MEN MUST BE REMOVED FROM POWER!
Remove their lies from our world and freedom will spread on its own. Leave them in place and freedom is forever impossible.

They have these shirts about bitcoin that say "it can't really be that stupid", but that really does apply to the entire money system. Money is insane. The people promoting it are insane. It's money itself that is killing us, and will keep killing us, until a very specific group of liars are removed from power.
The people who are actually building the Fediverse, pushing the technology forward, they’re not the purists. They’re certainly not cosplaying. They certainly don’t look the part either.
Personally, I wish I could do more to build the Fediverse. But I also need to take care of my family. And family comes first.
doing actual activism on the ground is also not always pretty. Sometimes it means you're feeding homeless people alongside a Maoist and a religious conservative because no one else showed up in the cold weather. It's also hard to know how to improve the Fediverse if you never even try other social media. I literally worked for Meta at one point and that experience is what got me enthusiastic about decentralized.
@thomasjwebb Yeah, I’ve been there. I, too, worked for a big social media company. It’s what made me realize how centralized social is both unfair and subject to abuse. The interesting thing is, even the people who’ve made these systems acknowledge this to be the case. We got lots of former Twitter and Facebook developers here.
This is an important point that I would love to see more people acknowledge: how little overlap there is between AP developers / platform builders and what I have been calling "the peanut gallery" - i.e. people with strong opinions ("the fediverse should have a high barrier to entry", "we don't want companies here", "you're wrong for wanting this feature") but no involvement in anything constructive. I know how vocal they are, but I think their opinions receive outsized attention.

And the thing is, the harder and more extreme someone is in their presentation, the more likely I’m convinced they don’t give a shit about the causes they espouse.
Uttering death threats because someone wants to talk to their friends on Threads? That ain’t “progressive”. That’s cosplay.
