Yeah, firefish.social was a mistake, and I own up to it. I no longer bang the drum on bleeding edge Fediverse projects.

What most of you don’t know is that I now admin akkomane.social, an akkoma+mangane server. It has been going strong since April 2024, hosts 57 accounts, and people there are very happy with the experience.

Why don’t I publicize it more? Because the most important thing to me is a nice, stable environment where people can just use social media. It’s a nice calm, chill place.

Hmm. I'd say it was a failure, but I'm not sure it was a mistake. I know I learned some things from it.

@TerryHancock I mean, I definitely learned things from it. Namely, to take a different approach. And I have.

@TheNovemberMan Seriously. What is this? Joe and Mika rush to the Führer's bunker to kiss the ring? Cenk and Ana go MAGA? And Wray hands over the slave patrol of slave patrols to the Gilead New Reconstructionist regime. WTF is with all the submission??????
They're showing who they actually are, no integrity, no honor, only there for an easy buck, folding as soon as there's any adversity.

The most effective way to prove a new idea is to start small, test, learn, and test again. Basically, ever since I left high school, I’ve had a side hobby. No, I’m not referring to video games.

For a long time, I invested just a little bit in this side hobby and realized I was quite good at it. Awhile ago, I started making money at this hobby. Not a lot, but enough to validate some of my ideas.

Knowing my ideas have validation, I decided to make a living off this hobby – which is not a hobby any more.

If I write names of people I dislike in a notebook and use that as proof of them being bad people ("your name is on the list!") people call me deranged and childish.

But if someone claims a national liberation or guerrilla movement somewhere in the world is "a terrorist organization" because their name is in a list of enemies of the USA (called "terror watch list") people don't call them childish or deranged in spite of that being what they are.

Last year, I came to a conclusion: I’m in my 40s, without a college degree, and basically unhireable.

Sure, I worked in the tech start-up world for 15 years, and had success there. But nobody was knocking on my door.

For a moment, I thought about going back to school and getting a degree in computer science. I looked at tuition vs. salary, the math didn’t make sense.

But then an opportunity came, I seized it – and it has done very well for me!

Evan Prodromou mastodon (AP)
Wow, very interesting. What was the opportunity?
Chris Trottier pleroma (AP)

@evan It’s a certain hobby of mine that has to do with numbers. 🙂

This isn’t an opportunity that showed up out of nowhere, it’s something that I’ve been contemplating for decades. But last year, I decided that instead of supporting other peoples’ big ideas, I’d finally work on my own.

404 Media quotes Matt Mullenweg, who is very frustrated with the preliminary injunction in favor of WP Engine:

"I’m sick and disgusted to be legally compelled to provide free labor to an organization as parasitic and exploitive as WP Engine. I hope you all get what you and WP Engine wanted."

Whatever we might think of Matt’s campaign against WP Engine, I’m skeptical of this legal decision and expect it could be reversed when there’s a trial. It’s certainly great for WordPress.org to be a community resource, but should it be required to be so? Very odd precedent if true.

EFF Launches Digital Rights Bytes to Answer Tech Questions that Bug Us All

The scene is set in what appears to be a retro-style diner, viewed from the outside through a large window. The foreground is dominated by the window frame itself, while the background features a teal wall with the words "DIGITAL RIGHTS BYTES" prominently displayed in a stylized font. Inside the diner, three anthropomorphic animals—a penguin, a cat, and a dog—are seated at a counter, each enjoying a different treat. The counter is a simple teal color, and the overall color palette is muted and nostalgic. The penguin, cat, and dog seem to be engaging in friendly conversation. The penguin, wearing a bow tie, appears relaxed and content as it sips a milkshake. The cat looks cheerful, holding what seems to be a small sundae. The dog, wearing a sailor hat, has a slightly inquisitive expression, indicated by a thought bubble with a question mark above its head. Also, there is a silhouette of a figure in a hat visible outside the diner in the upper right corner; its presence hints at an unseen element beyond the window, adding a slightly mysterious touch to the illustration.
Yes, politicians and Big Corporates do twist narratives to suite their own agendas. EFF is aiming to try to give more objective and honest answers to technology questions, especially those which affect users’ privacy and security.

EFF is the leading nonprofit defending civil liberties in the digital world. Founded in 1990, EFF champions user privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and technology Development. I know the first logo and used it at this time. I was there Gandalf.... 3000 years ago.

I think even the first logo from 1998 has a cool retro spirit and would still work today.

What I don't like about the new logo is that it has become too nerdy. Non-net-savvy people no longer recognize what the logo says. But these people are the target group for Mozilla to collect donations. That's why I think the new logo is a failure.

What internet places/things could I show my grandparents the next time I visit them?

My grandparents practically don't leave their home anymore. So the next time I visit them, I would like to show them something they have not experienced or seen before.

I thought of taking them on a trip to different places using Google Earth (or something similar). I just want to go a little more interactive than just showing them videos or pictures.

I am limited to my laptop (and their TV + maybe a Chromecast).

Do you have any interesting internet things or places you would show your grandparents?

This is a great reminder about perspective for so many things.

Some people who are married and/or have children can't imagine how unmarried and/or people without children could possibly have chosen that lifestyle and be happy or content. And vice versa, of course.

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples. Your point about extroverted coworkers hit close to home since that recently happened to me.
