Hello ! Ce samedi, comme promis, et pendant que le livre VI de Tite-Live me regarde d'un air désapprobateur finir Ursula Le Guin, voici un petit fil sur les sources de la mythologie (et un peu de l'histoire) gréco-romaine !
D'où tire-t-on les mythes greczetromains, pourquoi existent-ils en mille versions, d'où certaines sont plus connues que d'autres et toutes les questions que jamais, jamais vous ne vous seriez posées sans moi, un THREAD ⬇️
Mouvement qui, en gros, reprenait les mythes célèbres et leur trouvait des explications rationnelles ; par exemple Héraclès n'a pas vaincu une hydre dont les têtes repoussent mais asséché un marais qui causait des infiltrations d'eau récurrentes... Un peu comme certains chercheurs qui veulent trouver "l'histoire derrière le mythe".
En tout cas, comme la société baignait dans les récits mythiques (un peu comme nous dans la culture du cinéma, on connaît tous les Disney, les Marvel...)...

Agora tudo decorre das alterações climáticas...
~~~~~
Antigamente diziam:
• 1970: o petróleo acabará em 10 anos.
• 1980: sofreremos outra era glacial dentro de 10 anos.
• 1990: a chuva ácida destruirá as colheitas dentro de 10 anos.
• 2000: a camada de ozônio desaparecerá em 10 anos.
• 2010: os pólos derreterão em 10 anos.
• 2020: se estiver quente é devido ao aquecimento global e se estiver frio sofremos alterações climáticas.... e assim por diante.
Atualmente:
• Já não são necessárias mais explicações específicas, agora tudo decorre das alterações climáticas.
Deve dar que pensar.
I would like my fellow men to internalise that "toxic masculinity" doesn't mean masculinity is toxic. It barely even refers to toxic behaviors men can exhibit, such as making misogynistic remarks - although that is much closer to the truth.
It refers to a system in which men are brought up to hold beliefs that are toxic: to women and children, to each other, to themselves.
"Boys don't cry" is toxic masculinity. "A man has to take care of his family" is - caretaking is good, but that...
@kotaro I think it should be a question about ability and want.
IBM, for all its faults, has two advancement tracks: a management track, and an expert track. Each comes with training and increased responsibility, but only the management track looks like a classic "promotion".
Any person is growing and likely should be able to advance along a track that reflects their growth. I just don't think that "promotion" is the path, that it relates to gender, that it's necessary to grow professionally.
... statement traps men in a cycle of suffering in which help must be rejected by definition, the job cannot be fulfilled without personal sacrifice, and the stress of that suffering must be offloaded. Often in ways that damage others.
The term "toxic masculinity" isn't your enemy. It is not (necessarily) criticism of you.
It's your escape route.
Use it.
I guess that this is one of the "food samples" you find almost everywhere in Japan. Restaurants for example often have bowls of ramen on display, looking exactly like the dishes they are offering, but made of plastic. That way you know exactly how that dish looks like and even if you don't know Japanese at all, just point at the sample.
So this is advertising for a sample manufacturer.
Bon, déjà, petits disclaimers : je vais vous parler uniquement de mythologie grecque et romaine, car pour plein d'autres cultures aux mythologies riches et complexes, les problématiques sont complètement différentes, typiquement la mythologie "nordique" c'est super intéressant et bizarre.
Ensuite, ce fil n'a qu'une vocation de découverte et vient de mon expérience de fouineuse de livres anciens depuis 2007 ; de vrais chercheurs et chercheusesTM vous en diront plus et plus précisément 😀
Les mythes grecs et romains ont cette spécificité que, par rapport à d'autres cultures, on les connaît vraiment bien. Très bien. Un peu trop bien.
On a une foultitude de sources écrites s'étalant en gros de 750 av. J.-C. (Homère) au... XIIe siècle APRES J.-C. (les érudits byzantins comme Tzétzès).
Dans ces sources, on compte :
> des œuvres littéraires de fiction
> des œuvres littéraires "historiques"
> des allusions dans de la non-fiction
> des... équivalents de dictionnaires de mythologie
L'Iliade et l'Odyssée, outre qu'ils racontent des épisodes mythiques, sont truffés d'allusions à d'autres épisodes mythiques.
Dans le monde latin, les Métamorphoses d'Ovide ont été longtemps lues comme un répertoire de légendes, ce qui est, on va dire, à 50 % respectueux de l'oeuvre, mais c'est un autre débat.
Dans les superstars on compte aussi les tragédies grecques d'Eschyle, Sophocle et Euripide, et si vous me demandez "y en a pas d'autres", la réponse est "si mais on les a perdues".
Et bien sûr tout un tas d'œuvres littéraires antiques moins connues du grand public, conservées en entier ou en fragments, comme La Suite d'Homère (en entier), les Chants cypriens (en fragments).
Mais bon. Le souci des oeuvres littéraires, c'est quand même... qu'elles ont des auteurs.
Et ces auteurs, parfois, ne se connaissent pas les uns les autres (parce que certains écrivent genre 10 siècles après d'autres, dans une autre langue et une autre aire géographique), ou se réécrivent, ou jouent sur la tradition, ou sortent des versions tellement hors normes qu'on peut les soupçonner d'inventer.
Un exemple.
Le dramaturge Euripide, auteur de tragédies athénien, quasi-éternel 2e ou 3e des concours de théâtre de l'époque.
Par exemple, qu'Hélène n'est jamais vraiment allée à Troie. Ou qu'Oreste a pris Hélène en otage.
Il paraît qu'il innovait aussi dans la musique de ses pièces.
Il faut penser que les récits qui nous apparaissent comme mythiques n'étaient, pour les Grecs et Romains, pas bien distincts de l'histoire, et qu'Héraclès, Thésée, Achille... étaient considérés comme des personnages réels par les historiens antiques. Avec un brin, cependant, de scepticisme devant le merveilleux des mythes.
Si bien que certains mythes sont rapportés par des historiens. Hérodote, par exemple, commence son livre par passer en revue les mythes où on voit un contact ou un conflit entre l'Europe et l'Asie. Tite-Live rapporte la légende de la fondation de Rome.
Ou encore Diodore de Sicile, mon petit chouchou, qui collectionnait et résumait d'autres livres historiques. Puisque le mythe fait partie de l'histoire, il nous a livré un récit quasi intégral des travaux d'Héraclès.
Petit aparté :
S'il y a une chose à vous rappeler sur l'Antiquité, c'est que lire des textes antiques, c'est comme explorer un iceberg sans savoir nager. En permanence on se rend compte de la masse invisible et inaccessible des textes et des récits qu'on a perdus et qu'on n'aura jamais.
(et encore, je me plains mais c'est mille fois pire quand on s'intéresse à d'autres cultures)
Fin de l'aparté.
Dans l'Antiquité, les mythes forment une culture commune transméditerranéenne.
C'est pourquoi dans la non-fiction, dans les discours, dans les traités philosophiques, les mythes sont convoqués dans des buts argumentatifs. Platon est un expert du genre. Il reprend (invente ?) des mythes en guise d'arguments, par exemple les trois juges des Enfers (ou l'Atlantide, mais c'est un cas spécial de "faux mythe").
Waarschuwing inhoud: CW mythe de cul
... ou encore, de manière super marrante, les auteurs chrétiens des IIIe-IVe-Ve siècles qui veulent prouver à quel point le paganisme c'est trop nul vont raconter des mythes vraiment perchés, comme celui où Dionysos invente en même temps le gode et la nécrophilie.
Et alors ça, la petite mythographe se frotte les mains.
C'est assez marrant d'ailleurs, ces usages argumentatifs des mythes, car les auteurs antiques les introduisent souvent en disant "les poètes racontent"...
On sent que pour eux les récits mythiques sont associés à la fiction littéraire. On y croit, mais avec des réserves. On croit qu'Héraclès existe, on croit même qu'il est fils de Zeus, on croit pas forcément qu'il a percé un géant à trois corps. On estime que des "poètes" ont inventé tout ce qui semble peu vraisemblable.
Il y a d'ailleurs eu, dès l'Antiquité, une tentative de rationalisation des mythes à travers un mouvement philosophique appelé l'évhémérisme.
