The best proof that democracy is a terrible system is that people voted for Trump.

It really is! But.

What do we want? Good governance, rights, security. I suspect there's an impossibility triangle lying there.

Depending on what we mean by good governance. I think we mean maximizing prosperity.

What trades are acceptable? Only democracy can tell.

But there must be a bedrock of each that is non-negotiable. Fundamental rights, basic economic rights, working regalian institutions.

They can all be very basic! But whatever they are they must be universal, enforced, and actual.

My expectation is that the US will become a very corrupt state, where courts are bought, and where doing business becomes impossible.

The Russian, Hungarian, Turkish model.

Because the US is a petro-state, they will get away with it, for a short while. Even Saudi Arabia knows oil's days are numbered.

Maybe lithium and rare earths will do it.

In any case, they're fucked for the next 50 years.

I'm *not* as worried about climate change however. Sure, it's bad on the face of it.

But today, the fight is about electrification, renewables, nuclear, and insulation. All of which will do absolutely fine.

Later, there will be other things, and honestly, I'm not sure what they are. Probably better design, urbanism, different agricultural practices. DAC, eventually.

But the urgent stuff? It's all happening.

Two key turning points were passed in the 2022-24 period:

1. The USA now has more jobs in renewable energy than coal/oil/gas. (Which means lobbying muscle that wasn't there a decade ago.)

2. PV roll-out worldwide is rising fast: we install as many solar panels in five days now as were installed in the whole of 2004, and the rate is doubling every 18 months or so.

The petrochemical industry wouldn't be panicking and lobbying this hard if they weren't in mortal peril!

@zakalwe @iinavpov

So the putin thing's kinda fascinating in this regard!

'cuz -this- happened the other day - nbcnews.com/politics/donald-tr…

and I kinda half wonder if he's planning to try to divest himself from putin's influence, and empire-build using Ukraine as a proxy in the region.

Which 'he' I'm referring to is left ambiguous deliberately.

I'd love to see it, but frankly I'm not convinced Trump has either the vision to see Ukraine's importance to the future, or the balls to say "No" to Putin. His claim that "he would end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours" is hollow bluster.

White women are literally in denial about their role in constantly oppressing other women and I’m absolutely sick of it. Blaming white men and other demographics when as usual, the problem is KKKaren upholding white supremacist terrorism.

“Let’s be clear: this malicious criminal does not have the barbaric mandate he claims for himself. On the contrary, it is the opposition that has a mandate, derived from centuries of democratic tradition.”

Correct, in theory. The key of course is that the opposition doesn't fracture into multiple single issue parts which is of course what they'll aim for. "Divide and conquer" isn't a saying for nothing, it's worked very well indeed for millennia.
The opposition is already fractured, I'm afraid. That's how he won the popular vote AND the EC.

#WritersCoffeeClub #writing community 11/9 Do you ever use particular punctuation characters, like [, ], {, }, <, >, #, _, *?

I like semi-colons—a lot!

Unfortunately my editors don't.

The only problem with semicolons in creative writing is people misusing them because they don't understand what they're for. The semicolon is nearly as badly misunderstood in common use as is the apostrophe, which DOES NOT in actual fact mean "Look out, an s is coming."
I don't actually make much use of any of those. But I make wide use of « » to indicate "These words are being spoken in a different language." And yes, I use semi-colons — where appropriate. And ellipses, and em-dashes. And I still use two spaces after a period, dammit. I don't care about the ivory-tower arguments about whether it is "proper" to do so; it improves readability.

Find safety in strength, find strength in community.

I watch lots of videos of red pandas on YouTube, and keep getting AI slop recommended, along the lines of "Five facts about red pandas", where the voice is AI, the content is AI generated (and often incorrect) and images are swiped from other videos I recognise.

I mark them as don't recommend channel, but I don't want to mark them as not interested because I can't specify why I'm not interested, and don't want to stop seeing videos on that subject. It's infuriating and frustrating.

There is more and more LLM-created garbage on the Internet. I have come across no evidence to refute the hypothesis that it is part of an intentional strategy to flood the Net with more and more garbage until nobody can tell what is true any more.

Don't ever ask me to sing.

freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngul…

Oh dude! Yup, that memory will always stick with you and everyone around. He'll, I think it will stick with me, now.

I was in the choir in middle school. I loved it so much and it took me a long time to slowly understand I couldn't sing worth beans. I'm still embarrassed to this day.

Early in elementary school, we had our first official music class. Everyone tried their hand at those cheap plastic flute-things.

Several of us were asked to sing, instead.

Then I was told to sit quietly by myself and read. Suited me to a T.

I used to tell people that the only musical instrument I could play was a radio!

"Israeli “hooligans” chanted songs swearing at Arabs, saying, “There are no schools in Gaza because there are no children left."

“The fact that Israeli fans riot in the middle of #Amsterdam, sing racist songs and climb the walls of homes to tear down #Palestinian flags … is part of the #Israeli condition at the moment: A complete detachment between actions and consequences."

#ClimateDiary Last year I did this 50+ 🧵 on #COP28, trying to argue that it’s important to engage, looking at all key issues. This year I am with Papua New Guinea and many of you who had already reached this point last year: there is no point. Or even if there is: i have no energy for it. I am sitting this one out.

Anyway, quite a lot of stuff here - if anyone is interested, might be useful background info for #COP29
