Today, Nov 8 (among many other things) marks the 15 year anniversary of the very first JSConf EU here in Berlin.

I might write up a proper retrospective some day, but today, I’m sharing a few impressions that I shot on my then brand new iPhone 0. Do excuse the picture quality.

If you spend enough time online, that experience constitutes a large amount of the data that conditions your mind.

Even on federated apps, many posts will contain links to non-federated platforms and posts from fediverse users conditioned by those platforms.

Just imagine a chatbot that was only trained on sensationalized algorithmically-fed negative-biased distraction.

This is what your mind will become by default if you don't become aware and carefully moderate your online experience.

When Elon bought Twitter, we saw an immense migration from that platform to here.

When Trump got elected, I've seen nothing but increases to BlueSky.

The Fediverse really missed a window.

Mastodon isn't really situated for mass appeal, but when Twitter sold, it was effectively the only Twitter-like alternative on offer. Now that there are alternatives that were built specifically for mass commercial appeal and growth at scale, it's unsurprising to see them pick up the bulk of transfers anytime X goes through a new hemorrhage.

I expect that to be the pattern from now on. Which seems like losing if we measure the fediverse by the standards of universalist, VC-funded, growth-at-scale social media. But that may not be the best standard for judging a network that seeks to foreground other values.

We as a network need to be content with losing out on the mass part of mass migration. We're much better served by making this the most welcoming possible network for people who want their social media shaped by a different set of values than those that the drive corporate behemoths.

The progression I've seen over and over again in my seven or eight years on the fediverse is people showing up and expressing frustration because the whole world isn't here, and even the parts of it that are here aren't as accessible as they were on other services, and finding people isn't intuitive, and you can't see all of the posts that you think you should be able to see. And eventually, it starts to click for the ones who stick with it, and you see them say things like, "yeah, not everyone I'd like to follow is here, but I don't feel as anxious online," or "a lot of things don't work properly, but I really appreciate the weird little subcultures I've plugged into here."

That's what we should be cultivating. There are a lot of things that need fixing and development on the fediverse, but the goal should be to get people safely to that point with less friction, not getting everyone on the planet into the same room together.

@L. Rhodes Since there are no algorithms, the fediverse give out only as much effort as you put in. Self-curation is a lots artform. Most want to be entertained with as little effort as possible. Those who love it here put in the most work. That said, sharable lists like the bluesky starter packs are something I've advocated for about 4 years now but no one has done anything about it. I got the idea from MEWE for the year I was on there before discovering the fediverse.

Missed a window to do what? What are you suggesting the Fediverse should have done?

Bluesky has millions being poured into it by its cryptocurrency owners, and is basically a single centrally-planned for-profit. (This will eventually lead to it enshittifying.)

The Fediverse is a loose community of volunteers supported by donations and grants. It deliberately doesn't have any kind of central power controlling it, nor any for-profit funding.

A lot of us are doing our best to help new people, no one is paying us to do this. It's frustrating when people criticise volunteer projects for lacking the resources of corporations.

If Trump & his red Congress gets rid of the ACA, please remember that means your health insurance will no longer have to cover your kids until age 26. They’ll toss them off at 18 unless they’re in school full-time. I remember what it was like before the ACA; I had parents calling about their cancer stricken child too sick to actually attend school—“please don’t withdraw him for not attending. I beg you.” Fuck every person who voted for a return to this.
