Today, Nov 8 (among many other things) marks the 15 year anniversary of the very first JSConf EU here in Berlin.
I might write up a proper retrospective some day, but today, I’m sharing a few impressions that I shot on my then brand new iPhone 0. Do excuse the picture quality.
Starting at the end, this is traditional family photo that we shot at the end of all conferences. 120 people in a raw industrial space in Berlin Kreuzberg. With Chris & Laura Williams, initiators of JSConf US on video.
Four of our headline speakers, all of which have gone on to do amazing things.
- Amy Hoy @amyhoy@mastodon.social
- Nicole Sullivan @stubbornella
- Ryan Dahl (announcing Node.js to the world on my laptop)
- Remy Sharp of #ffconf fame @rem@front-end.social
Thanks to Matthias Meyer for taking way better pictures than I did.
If you spend enough time online, that experience constitutes a large amount of the data that conditions your mind.
Even on federated apps, many posts will contain links to non-federated platforms and posts from fediverse users conditioned by those platforms.
Just imagine a chatbot that was only trained on sensationalized algorithmically-fed negative-biased distraction.
This is what your mind will become by default if you don't become aware and carefully moderate your online experience.
When Elon bought Twitter, we saw an immense migration from that platform to here.
When Trump got elected, I've seen nothing but increases to BlueSky.
The Fediverse really missed a window.
Missed a window to do what? What are you suggesting the Fediverse should have done?
Bluesky has millions being poured into it by its cryptocurrency owners, and is basically a single centrally-planned for-profit. (This will eventually lead to it enshittifying.)
The Fediverse is a loose community of volunteers supported by donations and grants. It deliberately doesn't have any kind of central power controlling it, nor any for-profit funding.
A lot of us are doing our best to help new people, no one is paying us to do this. It's frustrating when people criticise volunteer projects for lacking the resources of corporations.
One stupid, orange motherfucker is not going to stop us.
He is one man and we are millions.
Its not over.

Someone did a tear down of the new Apple M4 Mac Mini:

The SSD is removable!
It's probably similar to the Mac Studio and will require some inventive sorts to come up with something to make PCBs for after market upgrades and get the NANDs to be flash-able via DFU mode similar to this:

Still, surprisingly not as brain dead design given that this is Tim Cook era Apple.

Are they Liberals or Conservatives?
They seem to have progressive ideas.
Which one?
(Laugh track ensues, cut to commercial.)
