Cool Croc Twins for the Atari ST is a fun arcade-style puzzle game. And it’s also a fever dream of hilarity.

The opening cut scene must be one of the most memorable I’ve since in an early 90s game. Holy crap, I can’t get over it. It’s only a few seconds long, but damn, is there a lot to unpack.

It kicks off with a lady croc – not just any lady croc, but one that’s meant to be the Cindy Crawford of reptiles. She’s lounging around a field full of flowers, just vibing, when the “Cool Croc Twins” decide to show her their A-game. Spoiler: their A-game might be more of an F.

One twin goes full flex mode, showing off those incredible biceps. The other twin decides breakdancing is the way to a lady’s heart. And she’s like “Um, yeah, no thanks,” and just strolls off mid-flex. Our so-called “cool” protagonists are left standing there, crushed. But do they give up? No

Lady croc, though, is having none of it. She walks off because she’s like, “Oh well, back to what I was doing…”

What does this have to do with the actual game? I have no clue. The actual gameplay is about turning on lightbulbs by banging them with their head. And while you’re doing this, your foes – including hairy humans – are trying to kill you while also undoing your work by turning off those lightbulbs.

Why? Who knows. Maybe this is a lesson on the futility of existence, or maybe it’s just an excuse to headbutt light fixtures. Meanwhile, lady croc is clearly elsewhere pretending she doesn’t know these two.

Then there’s the game over screen, which takes things into a wildly dark direction. Should you lose, the game over screen features a depressed “cool croc” all crying and sad, putting a gun to his head, about to pull the trigger – ready to end his life. It’s all very, “Haha.. wait, what?!” Imagine being 10 and seeing that – maybe it’s why 90s kids turned out the way we did.

The graphics? Pretty good for an Atari ST game. The sprites are well rendered, as are the backgrounds – and there’s a lot of colour. Now DOS and Amiga look a little sharper, but not by a large margin. And all told, the Atari ST did well for itself considering the price of the hardware.

But the reason I prefer the Atari ST version over others is because of the music. Now every version got its own soundtrack but only the Atari ST featured ragtime chiptunes inspired by Scott Joplin compositions. It makes for a funny contrast with the edgy croc characters, but when you’re playing the game, it’s awesome. Nothing like high-speed bulb-bopping with some jaunty ragtime to keep you going.

Controls are stellar. Like other computer systems of the day, the Atari ST primarily used a one button joystick. And it works. The joystick gives you movement, and the button is for jumping. This game works because the controls don’t try to do too much.

Benoît Varasse designed and programmed Cool Croc Twins. After this, he didn’t do much of anything – which is too bad because, in terms of gameplay, this is excellent. The game’s other bizarre aspects, well, that’s just funny in a dark way. But it was the 90s, this game was a product of its time.

So would I recommend Cool Croc Twins? Oh, absolutely. It’s a wild, weird, slightly unsettling slice of 90s gaming – though if you’re one who’s sensitive to certain grisly imagery, you may want to avoid it.

The Israeli fans instigated the violence after arriving in the city and attacking Palestinian supporters before the match, an Amsterdam city council member said.

“They began attacking houses of people in Amsterdam with Palestinian flags, so that’s actually where the violence started,” Councilman Jazie Veldhuyzen told Al Jazeera on Friday.

“As a reaction, Amsterdammers mobilised themselves and countered the attacks that started on Wednesday by the Maccabi hooligans.”

Amsterdam resident and activist Mo Kotesh told Al Jazeera Israeli fans attacked innocent people on the streets, property and taxi drivers on Wednesday and took down a Palestinian flag.

Kotesh, of the Palestinian community in the Netherlands, said that they went to an area near the central Dam Square – as instructed by the municipality – to hold a peaceful demonstration on the day before the match.

He said he saw locals trying to counter the violence started against them and their properties by Israeli fans.

Israeli “hooligans” chanted songs swearing at Arabs, saying, “There are no schools in Gaza because there are no children left.’”

“The fact that Israeli fans riot in the middle of Amsterdam, sing racist songs and climb the walls of homes to tear down Palestinian flags … is part of the Israeli condition at the moment: A complete detachment between actions and consequences,” he said.

According to Veldhuyzen, the council member, “The mayor says the police did act, but I would say they acted not at the right moments.”

He told Al Jazeera: “They acted only to protect the Maccabi hooligans when Amsterdammers stood up to defend their own people and defend their own houses. And this is when the police showed up to protect the Maccabi fans when they ran away after attacking people.”

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said he followed the news of the rioting with “horror”, adding that “the perpetrators will be tracked down and prosecuted”.

The shame white Liberals feel about Trump is the result of white guilt plus not wanting to acknowledge it.
