[UK] Children to be taught how to spot fake news and 'putrid' conspiracy theories online in wake of riots

Changes to the curriculum could mean schoolchildren analyse articles in English lessons to weed out fabricated stories, learn how to identify fake news in computer classes and analyse statistics in maths.

Bridget Phillipson said she is launching a review of the curriculum in both primary and secondary schools to embed critical thinking across multiple subjects and arm children against "putrid conspiracy theories".

It means schoolchildren may analyse articles in English lessons to help learn how to them weed out fabricated clickbait from accurate reporting.

Computer lessons could teach them how to spot fake news sites and maths lessons could include analysing statistics in context.

Does the UK not teach media literacy? I went to public school in Texas and we were given lessons on basic media literacy every few years at a minimum, though I don't think it was in-depth enough.

couldn't pronounce "graphics"

That's not how acronym pronunciation works though. We don't pronounce them based on the words they stand for, otherwise we would pronounce NASA, SCUBA, LASER, etc. differently. Both pronunciations have valid arguments so why can't we just accept both and stop being weird about it.

Joe Rogan can fuck right off for all the reasons. But first let's jam some dirty gym socks in his mouth to shut him the fuck up.

Roughly quoting Jay Mohr from his recent interview on Bobby Lee's Tigerbelly podcast:

"How Joe Rogan became the arbiter of what is funny is beyond me... all the times Joe Rogan has made us laugh... "

Joe Rogan has gotta be one of the least funny "comedians" in the game at the moment. I wish his relevancy would've peaked with Fear Factor.

It says "Trump agrees". I clicked on it thinking it was a done deal but it's very much not. It's misleading.

Edit- they changed it on the site. But damage is already done to people who just see the original headline and don't read into it.

I asked my question because the NYT headline that I personally saw didn’t say "Trump agrees," and I wanted to verify whether that was the actual headline or an interpretation of it.

Mystery Men was the flop superhero comedy that deserved better

cross-posted from: https://feddit.uk/post/15735604

Perhaps it’s fitting that a film about a ragtag rabble of not-so-superheroes failed to take off at the box office. But, 25 years since its release, the Ben Stiller-starring Mystery Men is worth rescuing from obscurity. That it hasn’t generated the cult following of so many other slightly under-the-radar movies of 1999 – think the cannibal horror movie Ravenous, or the Kirsten Dunst Watergate comedy Dick – feels criminal to the point of super-villainy.

The first and to date last feature film by the TV commercial director Kinka Usher, Mystery Men now seems curiously placed within the history of comic book movies. Released on 6 August 1999 in the US, it spoofed the superheroes that came before it, while anticipating – or preemptively satirising, even – the yet-to-happen superhero boom with ideas as sharp as anything seen in almost two decades of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not safe to swim: Paris Olympics event cancelled over Seine water quality concerns

The level of faecal bacteria in the Seine was above the World Aquatics standards of 400 colony-forming units of enterococci per 100 millilitres. The women's marathon swim competition is set for Thursday, while the men are scheduled to race Friday.

The actual level they found in the river was 436 units per 100 millilitres. This is definitely the right call.

Some subreddits could be paywalled, hints Reddit CEO

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has hinted that in future some subreddits could be paywalled, as the company seeks to devise new sources of income.

He suggested that the company might experiment with paywalled subreddits as it looks to monetize new features. “I think the existing, altruistic, free version of Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way it has,” Huffman said. “But now we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that nature.”

This is another move likely to anger Redditors. While the platform is a commercial enterprise, its value derives almost entirely from freely offered user content. That means Redditors feel at least some sense of ownership in a community endeavour, so the company needs to tread carefully when it comes to monetization at user expense.

TheGalacticVoid lemmy (AP)
The first thing that comes to mind is credit card point redemptions. Right now, the best information on getting stuff like free first class flights are on communities like FlyerTalk. If that info was super accessible, those opportunities wouldn't be available in the first place, and travel companies would be far less generous with rewards programs.

TheGalacticVoid lemmy (AP)
Cowboy_Dude lemmy (AP)

Per the official Stop Killing Games FAQ: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/faq
(apologies if formatting ends up looking weird)

Q: Aren't you asking companies to support games forever? Isn't that unrealistic?

A: No, we are not asking that at all. We are in favor of publishers ending support for a game whenever they choose. What we are asking for is that they implement an end-of-life plan to modify or patch the game so that it can run on customer systems with no further support from the company being necessary. We agree it is unrealistic to expect companies to support games indefinitely and do not advocate for that in any way. Additionally, there are already real-world examples of publishers ending support for online-only games in a responsible way, such as:

'Gran Turismo Sport' published by Sony
'Knockout City' published by Velan Studios
'Mega Man X DiVE' published by Capcom
'Scrolls / Caller's Bane' published by Mojang AB
'Duelyst' published by Bandai Namco Entertainment
etc.

That's fine for single player games but modifying some massive MMO so that someone can host it on a laptop is literally impossible. This language applies to everything. EVE Online, WoW, FFXIV, all of it would need to be able to run on someone's home computer when they're purposefully built from the ground up to work on massive servers?
Deze entry werd bewerkt (3 months ago)
Björn Tantau lemmy (AP)
It's not impossible at all. People have done this literally for decades. Classic WoW only exists because people hosted their own seevers and Blizzard wanted in on the money. Star Wars Galaxies the same. I think Everquest 1 as well. And probably others as well.
So why does this law need to exist if everyone is doing it and has been doing it for decades?
TheGalacticVoid lemmy (AP)

Just because it's possible with a small sample of games doesn't mean it's possible for all or even most of them.

Also, even if a normal desktop can't run a particular game server, there is almost always a way to get a computer that will.

Chrome sta iniziando a bloccare uBlock Origin
